Editor's Review

Five Nights At Freddy’s 2 is the second release of the same franchise in 2014. It was first available on Pc game platforms: Steam and Desura. Shortly after that, the Mobile remaster was available on iOS, Android and Windows Phone, provided by the same developer Scott Cawthon. This game is still a single player horror and survival is the key theme of FNAF 2. The story setting and basic plot remain consistent with FNAF 1. However, chronologically, this game is not a sequel of FNAF 1. Instead, it is a prequel in terms of the timeline of stories. The goal of the game remains the same and players must play the role of night watchman for the pizzeria and survive five consecutive nights to protect themselves and the restaurant from the animatronics sabotaging at night. However, at the same time, there are some changes and new features in this new release. There are six new characters being added to the gameplay and their identities can be recognized by the local criminal system. The previous four old characters are stored as the backup characters. Besides, in FNAF 2, players will randomly be given mini games in various themes and tasks such as “Foxy Go Go Go”. Those mini games are supplements for the main storyline and the seven characters. Besides, there are three human characters and animatronics as usual. From the 7th night, Fritz Smith will appear and take over the role of the security guard. In this new release, the puzzles and hints become more hidden and subtler. Players can discover various well-hidden cues to figure out the timelines and events. For example, the fact that FNAF 2 is actually before the story of its previous release can be perceived through multiple details, including the layout of restaurants and TV-set styles etc.

Review

Five Nights At Freddy’s 2 receives an above average rating on most game platforms. Just like its previous release, this game preserves the highlights and merits of the first game that went extremely popular. The game-making quality is still self-evident and the graphics is very smooth with cool color schemes and styles. As for the game genre, although this franchise generally labels itself as horror survival game. In this game, it may be sensed that the general gaming mechanism is leaning more towards the survival theme while the narrative and presentation on horror can be less nuanced than its preview. This is particularly perceivable that the supernatural incidents are depicted in a rather simplistic or even rough manner. However, as a first-person perspective game, the horror does not only come from jump scares, it is largely derived from the psyche paranoia of players. FNAF 2 also successfully plays this mind-psycho game and brings players the type of horror with a strong and lasting delayed effect. Furthermore, this game integrates mini games that are based on tasks. This feature cleverly waves the important details into the main storyline. By playing those clearly-themed mini tasks, players can better understand the characters and their different attacking styles and approaching methods. Those mini games on the one hand can be a part of the challenge. On the other hand, they can be a helpful side tool for players to better perform in the main game. That being said, this game also comes with certain rooms for improvement. Apart from the few new features, the general gameplay and contents do not really introduce a lot of different elements, which would make some players feel less “new” about this game.

FNAF 2 continues the high quality game-making and artistic designs with good suspension and surprises.
The character attacks and mysterious storylines are not handled with enough intriguing nuances.
